The Maumee Watershed Alliance (MWA), with funding from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, facilitated discussions among producers and retailers to identify barriers to adopting conservation practices in the summer of 2023. These discussions were built on earlier efforts from 2013 aimed at increasing funding and awareness of agriculture’s impact on water quality. This report incorporates participants’ shared experiences and provides constructive feedback on both state and federal conservation programs. Their insights reveal a strong need for enhanced government support to strengthen strategies to protect soil and water resources. Feedback and recommendations emphasize the importance of collaborative initiatives involving the agricultural sector, policymakers, and local communities to strike a balance between economic viability and environmental sustainability.
Collectively, the insights gained from these meetings inform a report intended for policymakers and agricultural advocates. By emphasizing solutions that address the challenges faced by agricultural producers, the MWA aims to improve water quality and nutrient management in the Maumee Watershed. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of sustained investment and innovation in conservation efforts to safeguard the health of Lake Erie and its tributaries.
